The system of plastics coding. Symbols to indicate properties of plastic polymers, materials. This designation should stand on plastic according to its type. Vector. Easy to adjust and scale to any size. In attached ZIP-archive contains Ai 8 version, EPS 8 version, PSD (1 layer, 5000 pixels wide) & transparent PNG (5000 pixels wide) files.
What’s indicates these symbols (codes from 1 to 7).
1 PET or PETE – polyethylene terephthalate.
Properties: clarity, strength, toughness, barrier to gas and moisture.
Applications: soft drink, water, beverage and salad dressing bottles; peanut butter and jam jars.
2 HDPE or PE-HD – high-density polyethylene.
Properties: stiffness, strength, toughness, resistance to moisture, permeability to gas.
Applications: water pipes, hula hoop rings, five gallon buckets, milk, juice and water bottles; grocery bags, some shampoo / toiletry bottles.
3 PVC or V – polyvinyl chloride.
Properties: versatility, ease of blending, strength, toughness.
Applications: blister packaging for non-food items; cling films for non-food use. Not used for food packaging as the plasticisers needed to make natively rigid PVC flexible are usually toxic. Non-packaging uses are electrical cable insulation; rigid piping; vinyl records
4 LDPE or PE-LD – low-density polyethylene.
Properties: ease of processing, strength, toughness, flexibility, ease of sealing, barrier to moisture.
Applications: Frozen food bags; squeezable bottles, e.g. honey, mustard; cling films; flexible container lids.
5 PP – polypropylene.
Properties: strength, toughness, resistance to heat, chemicals, grease and oil, versatile, barrier to moisture.
Applications: reusable microwaveable ware; kitchenware; yogurt containers; margarine tubs; microwaveable disposable take-away containers; disposable cups; plates.
6 PS – polystyrene.
Properties: versatility, clarity, easily formed.
Applications: egg cartons; packing peanuts; disposable cups, plates, trays and cutlery; disposable take-away containers.
7 OTHER or O – oftenpolycarbonate or ABS.
Properties: dependent on polymers or combination of polymers.
Applications: beverage bottles; baby milk bottles. Non-packaging uses for polycarbonate: compact discs; “unbreakable” glazing; electronic apparatus housings; lenses including sunglasses, prescription glasses, automotive headlamps, riot shields, instrument panels.
